Glenmorangie Open Weekend

Glenmorangie marks 175 years of its Highland single malt Scotch whisky at an open weekend celebrating its innovative approach to whisky creation. On Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th October, Glenmorangie’s legendary craftsmen, the Men of Tain, will open the Distillery’s doors to visitors. There, visitors can find out more about Glenmorangie’s pioneering heritage, explore different aspects of its whisky, alongside experts, and discover the Distillery’s ground-breaking plans to protect and improve its surroundings for the next 175 years.

Glenmorangie has been creating its award-winning single malt since 1843. At the open weekend, visitors will be able to explore the Distillery’s origins and some of its long-standing traditions, first hand. On Distillery tours, they will see its towering copper stills, renowned as the tallest in Scotland. The intrepid can fill a cask – and, for the first time, learn the age-old method of rolling casks from the Men of Tain, masters of this art. Meanwhile, talks by Glenmorangie’s historian will offer fascinating insights into the Distillery’s past.

Masterclasses will be held throughout the weekend. These will include the Distillery’s award-winning Whisky Creation Team guiding visitors through different Glenmorangie whiskies. Expert mixologists from one of the world’s leading cocktail bars will demonstrate how the trend for cocktails can accentuate particular aspects of the single malt. Glenmorangie’s relationship with food will also be showcased in demonstrations by chefs from Glenmorangie House – and through cheese and chocolate pairings.

Centre-stage will be Glenmorangie’s innovative work with the Marine Conservation Society and Heriot-Watt University, to restore oyster reefs to the Dornoch Firth, after a century’s absence. Some of the oysters bound for the Firth will be on display, while, for the first time, tours of Glenmorangie’s new anaerobic digestion plant will also be on offer. Together with newly established oyster reefs (renowned for their abilities to filter water), the plant will purify all the water the Distillery releases into the Firth.

 

There will be plenty for younger guests to enjoy during the weekend, with music from the Tain Pipe Band, falconry displays, face painting, complimentary ice-cream and other refreshments. A display from Glenmorangie’s partner, the National Museum of Scotland, will also be on show, celebrating Glenmorangie’s ancient provenance. Distillery Manager Andy MacDonald said: “This is a monumental year for Glenmorangie. We hope visitors will join us to celebrate 175 years of our exceptional single malt whisky and enjoy looking forward to 175 more.”

 

The Distillery is open 10:00-16:30 on 13 & 14 October. All the activities, tours, tastings and masterclasses are complimentary. Booking is advisable for cask filling & rolling, masterclasses, talks & tours.
