BEYOND
THE
CASK

From Seconds
to Decades.

seconds

It’s our passion for wood and craftsmanship that unites us with our partners at Grain Surfboards for our latest Beyond The Cask creation. Made from the oak staves of Glenmorangie casks, our unique surfboard is designed to last a lifetime.

Maybe because
he doesn't call it waiting.

“Catching a great wave takes time and dedication.”

As champion Scottish surfer Mark Boyd will attest, a lot of time, planning and dedication is needed to ride the world-class waves at Thurso East. After years of using PU performance shortboards, riding the Glenmorangie surfboard reminded Mark of the fun he had when he was discovering surfing for the first time. Handcrafted from the reclaimed staves of our whisky casks, it's a little heavier than plastic designs – so it's also a lot faster.

Mark Boyd

Cold-water surfing expert Mark Boyd, winner of the 2018 Scottish National Surfing Championships, was the first person to take to the waves to test out the Glenmorangie board.

Thurso east

Scottish Highlands

There was no question where our Glenmorangie board should be surfed for the very first time. Thurso East, close to Glenmorangie’s home in North East Scotland, features whisky-coloured barrel waves and offers some of the finest cold-water surfing in the world.

Glenmorangie’s expertise in wood is key to maturing our single malt. Crafted from American oak, our ex-bourbon casks are only ever used twice, enriching Glenmorangie Original with its complex flavours and warm, golden colour.

“Time is my ally”

Our American white oak casks have been reinvented as the Glenmorangie surfboard – but the process presented some interesting new challenges to our friends at Grain. They first had to discover a way to work with reclaimed Glenmorangie staves that were still saturated with whisky. The result of their skill and perseverence is this beautiful board, meticulously handcrafted using time-honoured techniques to ensure both its longevity and its performance out on the waves.

Andy MacDonald

As the Distillery Manager at Glenmorangie, Andy MacDonald is dedicated to our award-winning single malt. In association with the Main of Tain, he draws on generations of expertise in wood to oversee the spirit’s maturation in our fine oak casks.

During the ten-year maturation process, our hand-selected American white-oak casks enrich Glenmorangie Original with notes of vanilla, almond, coconut and honey, as well as giving it a buttery mouthfeel and golden hue. This is more than just a waiting game – this is an essential ingredient in Glenmorangie Original.

“It's not

of waiting.
It's a case
of letting
the whisky
work with
the wood.”
